Dear Orchard Park families/guardians,
As we approach the two-week mark until the start of our school year, I want to outline what you can expect in the days to come. I will break each area down by bullet statements to help make clear what the start of the school year might look like in September. Thank you for your continued support, kind words, and resilience through this very challenging time for our community. We need one another more now than ever before. I am here to facilitate your child’s adaptation to this unique academic environment. I am also here to answer your questions as we embark on this journey.
School supply lists were emailed prior to the switch to K-12 going entirely online. If you have already purchased these supplies, you are all set. Hold onto these supplies. Many of them will be used during virtual learning. If you have not purchased supplies, hold off until you hear from the homeroom teacher. They will offer you a modified list of essential materials for the first nine weeks.
We will finalize class lists early this coming week. Homeroom teachers will send individual emails to families on Wednesday, September 2nd, by the end of the business day. This email will also include an invite to a virtual Open House hosted by the homeroom teacher.
Technology and Support Material Pick up
We will use our carline at Orchard Park to distribute technology for those families who may need a Chromebook. If you do need a Chromebook or the one you have needs repair, please click on this link https://tinyurl.com/KCSBirds to complete the “request for technology” survey. We will have your device ready for you at your assigned pick-up time. We will also distribute hardcopy support materials to each student to help with virtual lessons. These bags will also have important “Start of the School Year” information from our front office. This process is pretty simple. You drive up, give us your child’s name and grade, we place items in your car. It is quite efficient. Kindergarten materials and Chromebooks will be distributed when you arrive for your child’s screening.

Learning Pods (More information coming from the district next week)
As Kettering City Schools begin the year with remote learning for all students, the district recognizes that our families, based on personal needs or circumstances, may need a safe and productive environment for their child to engage in remote learning during standard school hours independently.
What is a Learning Pod?
Learning Pods are a cost-free, in-person option offered for students in grades K-5 at elementary schools across the district. These pods are a place for students to independently engage in remote learning in a safe and productive environment during standard school hours. Students who qualify for a Learning Pod will also have access to before and after school care at the regular childcare schedule and cost.
Learning Pods are specifically designed for students of families who are essential workers, are unable to work from home, and the parent/guardian has exhausted all other childcare possibilities. A letter, on company letterhead, from the employer verifying essential worker status and inability to work from home will be required. Please read the information below about Learning Pods:
Learning Pods Information-KCS
If you would like to apply, please submit your application on the provided Google Form by Friday, August 28th, at 3:00 p.m. Students will be chosen by a lottery system and with all safety considerations taken into account. Families will be notified if they have a spot by Wednesday, September 2nd.
